Arrests Made in Connection to Deadly Chile Wildfire

Officials in Chile have detained a volunteer firefighter and a former forestry official in connection to the tragic wildfires that claimed over a hundred lives. The suspects are being investigated for their alleged role in starting the destructive fires that ravaged parts of the country.

Chilean authorities have detained a volunteer firefighter and a former forestry official for allegedly starting wildfires that led to over a hundred deaths earlier this year.

Both suspects have been accused of arson causing death and were placed in pre-trial detention by a court in Valparaíso following their charges on Friday.

At least 137 individuals lost their lives in the fires that swept through central and northern Chile in February. Government data shows that around 16,000 people were forced to leave their homes, and over 9,800 buildings were destroyed or damaged.

It was one of the biggest disasters in the country in the past 30 years, as estimated by the Research Center for Integrated Disaster Risk Management in Chile.

Investigators have found evidence that the two men planned in advance to start a fire when the weather conditions were just right for a fire of this size, regional prosecutor Claudia Perivancich revealed on Saturday.

Perivancich shared with local media that one of the suspects mentioned a financial motive for the plot. She also mentioned that prosecutors have asked for a six-month investigation period and have not ruled out the involvement of additional individuals.
