Police in San Antonio announced on Wednesday that they have arrested 19-year-old Christopher Preciado on suspicion of capital murder in connection with the deaths of 18-year-old Savanah Soto and 22-year-old Matthew Guerra. The bodies of the pregnant teenager and her boyfriend were found in a car last week.
Ramon Preciado, the father of Christopher Preciado, aged 53, was also arrested on charges of abuse of a corpse for allegedly assisting his son in "moving the bodies," according to police. CNN is currently investigating whether Christopher and Ramon Preciado have legal representation.
The case was classified as capital murder because of the death of an unborn child, according to San Antonio police Lt. Michelle Ramos. "It seems to be a drug-related transaction that turned deadly," stated San Antonio police Sgt. Washington Moscoso during a press conference on Wednesday.
Moscoso stated that there may be additional charges forthcoming. The bodies of Soto and Guerra, both with gunshot wounds, were discovered in a vehicle parked near a San Antonio apartment complex on December 26, according to the police.
From left, Christopher Preciado, 19, and Ramon Preciado, 53.
The bodies could have been there for "possibly three or four days," Police Chief William McManus stated last week, characterizing the crime scene as "extremely perplexing."
Soto, who had exceeded her delivery date, was officially declared missing by her family after she failed to attend a crucial medical appointment, stated the Leon Valley, Texas police.
According to CNN affiliate KSAT, Guerra was identified as Soto's boyfriend by her family members.
After asking for the public's help in identifying "two persons of interest," San Antonio police made arrests just days later. Surveillance video captured a pickup truck and the victims' vehicle driving up to each other in the area where the bodies were found before driving away. "One key piece of evidence collected at the scene was Savanah's cellphone, which was handed over to our technology team. They were able to extract valuable information from it," said Moscoso during a press conference. With the assistance of federal investigators, "we were able to get enough information, and that information was given to our detectives today," Moscoso added.
The information pointed authorities to the possible location of the pickup truck, and ultimately to the two suspects, Moscoso said.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
