What Is Best In Life? The 'Conan' Movies, Of Course
Conan the Barbarian, inspired by the pulp stories of Robert E. Howard, garnered immense popularity in the '70s and '80s through its highly successful comic book series by Marvel Comics. The influential film adaptation of the same name, released in 1982 and directed by the daring John Milius with a screenplay by Oliver Stone, proved to be a massive triumph. It catapulted Arnold Schwarzenegger, the Austrian bodybuilder-turned-actor, to stardom. The plot revolved around Conan's journey from enslavement to becoming a formidable warrior in the ancient realm of Hyboria. He also united a group of heroes to confront the malevolent cultist Thulsa Doom, portrayed by James Earl Jones. A sequel named "Conan the Destroyer" followed in 1984, presenting a slightly lighter and milder tone compared to its R-rated predecessor. Nonetheless, it delivered abundant spectacle of muscular action to captivate the audience. The cast of the sequel included notable figures such as Wilt Chamberlain, Grace Jones, and Mako. Despite Schwarzenegger expressing his desire for another Conan film repeatedly over the years, the project has remained trapped in the uncertain realm of development.
