It also continues the tradition of releasing a new film in Japan every summer since 1989.
New Anpanman film set to premiere in Japanese theaters on June 28, 2024
The full title of the new Anpanman movie has been revealed as Soreike! Anpanman: Baikinman to Ehon no Lulun, along with the confirmed release date of Friday, June 28, 2024 in Japanese theaters. The official X account for the franchise's films provided the information and a nearly 30-second-long teaser trailer for the movie.
The film's story centers on Anpanman's adversary, Baikinman, who, despite being typically villainous, tries to become a hero of justice after being drawn into a fantasy picture book. In the book, he encounters a large forest inhabited by fairies, including Lulun, whom Baikinman befriends. Eventually, Lulun asks him to defeat an elephant that is rampaging through the forest.
Baikinman reluctantly attempts to defeat the strong elephant but ultimately asks Lulun to call the hero to protect the picture book world. This film is a sequel to the 34th installment in the franchise, titled Soreike! Anpanman Roboly to Pokapoka Present, which was released in Japanese theaters in June 2023. The previous film earned over 113 billion yen (788 thousand USD) in its first three days.
Although the Anpanman movies are probably the most well-known aspect of the series today, it actually originated as a children's superhero picture book in 1973. The picture book series remained in publication for 40 years until 2013, when it came to an end following the death of the series creator and author, Takashi Yanase.
The series was later transformed into a television anime in October 1998 by TMS Entertainment. It has since continued for over 30 years, with a total of 1,627 episodes and 3,425 segments.
The character has been a source of inspiration for various works since its creation, including the popular One-Punch Man anime and manga series. It is also Japan's highest-grossing character, surpassing Hello Kitty in 2002 and maintaining that position as of 2019. Editor's P/S
As a dedicated Anpanman fan, I am thrilled about the upcoming 35th movie in the franchise, titled "Soreike! Anpanman: Baikinman to Ehon no Lulun." The release date set for June 28, 2024, has me eagerly counting down the days until I can witness another exciting adventure with my beloved superhero breadman. The fact that this film serves as a tribute to both the 35th anniversary of the original anime series and the 50th anniversary of the original picture book series makes it even more special.
The story's focus on Baikinman, Anpanman's mischievous adversary, taking a turn towards heroism is an intriguing twist that promises a unique and captivating narrative. The idea of Baikinman befriending a fairy named Lulun and embarking on a quest to save a fantasy picture book world adds a touch of magic and adventure to the mix. I can't wait to see how Baikinman's character develops throughout the film and whether he will ultimately embrace his heroic side or return to his villainous ways.
