Anne Hathaway expressed her relief that her Barbie movie didn't come to fruition, considering Margot Robbie's version was the one fans truly wanted. Greta Gerwig's highly-anticipated Barbie film, filled with a star-studded cast and infectious soundtrack, clearly stole the spotlight during the summer season.
Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling star in the film, which portrays Barbie and Ken's journey to discovering their individual identities beyond being just dolls. Interestingly, another live-action Barbie movie was in development, but the star of that project, Anne Hathaway, expressed relief that it was ultimately cancelled.
Hathaway says Robbie’s Barbie was the version fans needed
In a new interview with the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Hathaway expressed relief that her live-action Barbie never made it to the big screen.
Sony Pictures had initially intended to produce a live-action Barbie movie with Juno writer Diablo Cody in the writer's room and Amy Schumer in the lead role. However, when Schumer departed due to creative differences, Anne Hathaway was chosen as the actress to portray Mattel's iconic doll.
The release of Hathaway's Barbie was scheduled for July 2018, with Alethea Jones as the director and an inspiration drawn from Splash, Enchanted, and Big. Unfortunately, the movie never materialized, leading to the opportunity for Robbie and Gerwig, as reported by Variety.
Hathaway praised Greta, Margot, and their incredible team for hitting the mark with their project. She expressed her excitement about the impact it had, but also acknowledged that she considers it fortunate that it didn't come to fruition. She continued to commend Margot for her creative and producing abilities, highlighting the barriers they broke through with the movie "Barbie" and the opportunities it brought for many people.
"I have been a cinemagoer and a woman in Hollywood since I was a kid, so I'm really excited about the development. I genuinely believe that their film was the best possible version. If I thought the version I was attached to could have achieved that, my feelings might be different, but that's not the case."
Hathaway also expressed no regrets about her Barbie movie not getting off the ground, saying, "You just have to keep going. The right role finds the right person, and sometimes it's you and sometimes it's not. When it doesn't happen, trust more deeply and keep moving forward. It might sound cheesy, but you really have to maintain a sense of gratitude."

As a Gen Z netizen, I find Anne Hathaway's perspective on her unmade Barbie movie refreshing and insightful. Her ability to recognize and appreciate Margot Robbie's portrayal of Barbie as the one that truly resonated with fans demonstrates a level of maturity and self-awareness that is often lacking in the entertainment industry. Hathaway's willingness to acknowledge that Robbie's version was the superior choice, despite her own attachment to the project, speaks volumes about her character and professionalism.
Furthermore, Hathaway's comments about the importance of gratitude and maintaining a positive outlook in the face of disappointment are particularly relevant to Gen Z. As a generation that is constantly bombarded with information and opportunities, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed and discouraged when things don't go our way. Hathaway's advice to "keep going" and "trust more deeply" serves as a reminder that setbacks are a natural part of life and that perseverance and gratitude are key to achieving success and fulfillment.
