A new trailer for the upcoming streaming show Ripley has been released. This show is a fresh adaptation of Patricia Highsmith's novel The Talented Mr. Ripley from 1955. The novel was previously adapted into a movie starring Matt Damon in 1999 and a French thriller called Purple Noon in 1960. The new version of Ripley was created by Steven Zaillian and features Andrew Scott in the lead role, alongside Johnny Flynn and Dakota Fanning.
Netflix has recently revealed a full-length trailer for the Ripley show. Originally developed for Showtime, the show was eventually picked up by Netflix. Check out the trailer below:
Everything the New Trailer Reveals About Ripley
The trailer, with its sharp black-and-white cinematography, captures the moment when the law closes in on Tom Ripley. It then takes us back to the beginning of his journey. Ripley is tasked with convincing his old friend Dickie Greenleaf to return to America from Italy. However, this simple request leads Ripley into a complex world of jealousy, murder, and deceit. To survive, he must rely on his skills as a con artist.
Andrew Scott as Tom Ripley in Ripley - Everything the New Trailer Reveals About Ripley
The trailer for Netflix's Ripley gives us a glimpse into the show's aesthetic style. It appears that the series is filmed in black-and-white, adding to its period setting. Like other adaptations of Highsmith's work, Ripley is set in the past, specifically in the 1960s instead of the original mid-1950s timeframe.
The Ripley trailer appears to be a faithful adaptation of the original novel. It subtly hints at Ripley's desire to take over Dickie Greenleaf's identity and life, staying true to the book's themes. However, it remains unclear if the homoerotic subtext will be emphasized in this modern version.
Most of the book's characters are featured in the Ripley trailer, including Marge Sherwood, Dickie's love interest, Freddie Miles, Dickie's troublesome friend, and Tenente Roverini, the Italian investigator. The absence of Peter Smith-Kingsley, Ripley's friend in Venice, leaves uncertainty about his role in the show - whether it will follow the book's portrayal or explore a potential romantic storyline as seen in the movie.
Ripley premieres on Netflix on April 4.
