Amy Smart is hopeful for a Just Friends sequel after reuniting with former costar Ryan Reynolds.
"We just picked up right where we left off," Smart, 47, shared exclusively with We at The Art of Elysium HEAVEN Gala on Saturday, January 6. "We collaborated so effectively over 18 years ago, and after not seeing each other for so long, it was enjoyable to step back into those roles for a brief moment."
Regarding the potential for another movie, Smart believes it would be "a really fun idea."
Smart co-starred with Reynolds in the 2005 comedy Just Friends, where they portrayed characters trying to transition from best friends to romantic partners. While their characters ended the movie as a couple, Smart suggested that there are multiple possibilities for the storyline. However, she made it clear that she would not want her character to pursue anything with the film’s antagonist, Dusty.
Smart's husband, Carter Oosterhouse, jokingly told Us, "That would be incredible. It would be a complete turnaround." Smart and Reynolds came together to mark the 18-year anniversary of "Just Friends" in November 2023, appearing in a commercial called "Just Friendsgiving" for Reynolds' Aviation American Gin brand.

Smart arrived home carrying an empty bottle of Aviation gin, while Reynolds admired their festive Christmas decorations.
"I've definitely had better days. The bar completely ran out of Aviation American Gin," she remarked, motioning for the director to cut the scene. Their holiday-adorned home quickly transformed into a green screen. "This is so strange," commented Smart.
"Once we get to post-production, it will be like our second home. I assure you, it's going to look fantastic," Reynolds assured. "I think we should give it another try."
As they reset the scene, Reynolds became more explicit, swearing when Smart mentioned there was no more Aviation Gin at the bar.
“That was quite a dramatic response,” she interjected, pausing the scene once more. Reynolds retorted, “After 18 years, I think the characters have evolved, so let’s give it another try.”
After another attempt at the scene, Smart caught on to Reynolds' deception and realized she had been lured into filming an advertisement for his gin company.
"Let's not jump to conclusions," Reynolds said with a chuckle, quipping that the ad was a "self-financed follow-up" to Just Friends.
"Lesson learned: never work with your idols," Reynolds exclaimed as Smart left the set. Smart shot back, saying, "You're not my damn hero."
Smart expressed her gratitude and excitement about being honored with The Spirit of Elysium Award at the gala, which recognizes outstanding charitable contributions made by celebrities.

"We have partnered with [Oosterhouse’s] group, Carter’s Kids, to construct playgrounds for several years, and we have also dedicated our time to volunteering with the Art of Elysium," she explained. "It's a bit strange to receive an award because we consider ourselves just one of many volunteers, but we are truly grateful for the recognition."
