AMD's Next-Gen Radeon RX 7800 and RX 7700: Unleashing Unparalleled Power for Enthusiast Gamers

AMD is set to release new high-performance graphics cards, likely the RX 7700 and RX 7800, as part of their Radeon RX 7000 series by September's end Expect improved performance and cutting-edge features from these enthusiast GPUs

Highlights

AMD is planning to release new enthusiast-tier GPUs in the Radeon RX 7000 series this quarter, expanding their RDNA 3 lineup.

The RX 7700 and RX 7800 GPUs, expected to release soon, aim to cater to the mid-range segment of AMD's product lineup, focusing on a more cost-effective market. By categorizing these GPUs as enthusiast-class, AMD indicates that there might not be any new ultra-enthusiast options in the RX 7900 series later this year.

AMD is set to launch new graphics processing units (GPUs) in the Radeon RX 7000 series this quarter, targeting enthusiasts. CEO Lisa Su confirmed this during a Q2 2023 Earnings Call, stating that the RDNA 3 lineup will feature enthusiast-class GPUs, specifically the Radeon RX 7700 and RX 7800. It is worth mentioning that AMD has shifted its categorization from "ultra-enthusiast" to "enthusiast" for its upcoming GPUs, indicating a focus on mid-range markets rather than the higher end.

Last year, AMD unveiled the Radeon RX 7000 series in response to Nvidia's RTX 40 series. However, the company initially released only two GPUs, the RX 7900 XT and RX 7900 XTX, as their flagship options to compete with the RTX 4070/Ti and RTX 4080. To address the entry-level segment, AMD introduced the RX 7600 in May of this year. Consequently, there has been a notable gap in the mid-range offerings, much to the anticipation of AMD fans.

The company has recently confirmed the upcoming release of new GPUs. CEO Lisa Su mentioned in a Q2 2023 Earnings Call that they expanded their Radeon 7000 GPU series in the second quarter by introducing the RX 7600 cards for 1080p gaming. Additionally, she stated that they are planning to further expand their RDNA 3 GPU offerings in the third quarter with the launch of enthusiast-class Radeon 7000 series cards.

It is speculated that Su's comments indicate the introduction of the Radeon RX 7700 and RX 7800, or possibly an "XT" model of the same. This news is particularly exciting for fans of Team Red, especially considering the leaked pricing for these cards. The RX 7700 is expected to be priced at $449, while the RX 7800 could launch at $549. These prices position the cards between the $257 RX 7600 (currently the cheapest model available) and the $750 RX 7900 XT.

The upcoming lineup may consist of the RX 7700 and RX 7800, and potentially include XT and XTX variants. This expansion would help fill in any remaining gaps in the pricing structure.

Adding to this, AMD has categorized these GPUs as "enthusiast-class," suggesting that there won't be any new offerings in the "ultra-enthusiast" RX 7900 series of cards later this year. Currently, AMD doesn't have a GPU that directly competes with the RTX 4090, and even their top-tier RTX 7900 XTX performs similarly to the RTX 4080. The chipmaker seems to indicate that this decision was based on their perception of the market for their products.

The company recently introduced an updated version of the RX 7900 XT, known as the Radeon RX 7900 GRE (Golden Rabbit Edition). Originally launched in China, it will be available worldwide through system integrators. The GPU offers 16GB of VRAM, which is slightly lower than the standard RX 7900 XT's 20GB. It also includes 84 RDNA 3 compute units (powered by dual 8-pin connectors), an ARGB header, a Fan-In connector, and a BIOS switch. Interestingly, the Navi 31 package found on the RX 7900 GRE is physically smaller than the ones on the RX 7900 XT and RX 7900 XTX. TechPowerUp has also discovered other physical differences in the GPUs. While this GPU is currently exclusive to China, AMD has big plans for its RDNA 3 lineup globally.
