Tech giant AMD has unveiled its latest flagship mobile GPU, the Radeon RX 7900M, in an effort to narrow the gap with its competitors. This new addition to the RDNA 3 line of AMD Radeon graphics cards boasts 16GB of GDDR6 memory, placing it among the top-tier options for mobile gaming. The release of the RX 7900M follows the introduction of the Radeon RX 7700 XT and 7800 XT graphics cards, which aimed to bridge the mid-range gap between the RX 7600 and RX 7900 XTX models. With a particular emphasis on increased VRAM compared to the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 and enhanced ray-tracing performance compared to the previous RDNA 2 generation, AMD is determined to attract budget-conscious PC gamers seeking affordable upgrades in 2023 and 2024 as it strives to catch up to Nvidia in the graphics card market.
AMD has introduced an appealing option for gamers on the move. Currently, the RX 7900M is exclusively available on Dell's Alienware m18 gaming laptop, starting at a retail price of $2,799.99. Despite not being the most budget-friendly option, Dell has coupled the RX 7900M with AMD's Ryzen 9 7945HX mobile CPU, a powerful 16-core processor with a boost frequency of up to 5.4 GHz. This CPU also utilizes AMD's 3D V-Cache technology to enhance gaming performance. The RX 7900M itself boasts 16GB of VRAM, twice that of the RX 7600M mobile GPU. It has a base clock speed of 1825 MHz, which can be further boosted to 2090 MHz depending on the game, and a maximum graphics power of 180 watts.
Targeted for 1440p resolutions, the Radeon RX 7900M falls in the same category as the previously mentioned Radeon RX 7700 XT and the mobile version of Nvidia's RTX 4080. When compared to the 4080, the 7900M demonstrates approximately a 7% higher average performance, particularly in terms of raw rasterization. However, Nvidia's ray-tracing performance still slightly outperforms the 7900M in titles like Forza Horizon 5 and Doom Eternal, where the RX 7900M achieves frame rates of 79 and 133 FPS respectively.
The Radeon RX 7900M is compatible with AMD's FSR3 upscaling technology to enhance frame rates in compatible games. Currently, the Alienware m18 is the exclusive laptop offering the RX 7900M, but it remains to be seen if other laptops will also adopt it.
