Heard's statement was released after her court case against Depp, in which she claimed that Warner Bros. didn't want to include her in the movie and her role was reduced in the sequel. Director James Wan responded by explaining that his vision for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom was always to focus on Aquaman and Orm, with the first movie meant to highlight Mera more prominently. Wan described the first movie as a romance action-adventure and the second as a bromance action-adventure.
In court, Heard stated that she had to "struggle significantly to maintain my career" following the restraining order against Depp. She revealed that she missed out on opportunities and lost work due to the situation. She also claimed that Warner Bros. altered her role.
The highly publicized legal battle between Heard and Depp concluded in 2022, with Depp being found guilty of defaming Heard. He was required to pay Heard $2 million, while he was awarded $10 million in compensatory damages.
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom released at the end of December and has so far earned close to $259 million globally at the box office.
