Nathan Fillion's The Rookie has become one of the most beloved network dramas on television. Interestingly enough, Fillion has managed to bring on board eight of his former co-stars from previous series for guest appearances on the show. Fillion first captured audiences' attention as Captain Malcolm Reynolds in the cult favorite series Firefly, which unfortunately only lasted one season before being canceled by Fox in 2002. He then took on the role of a renowned mystery writer assisting the NYPD in solving murder cases in the critically acclaimed series Castle, which aired for an impressive eight seasons on ABC starting in 2009.
Now, since 2018, Fillion has taken on the main protagonist role of LAPD Officer Nolan Ryan in ABC's The Rookie. The show delves into the life of Nolan, who happens to be the oldest rookie officer in the entire department, as well as the lives of his fellow officers in the Mid-Wilshire Division. Throughout the five seasons of The Rookie, Fillion has had the opportunity to reunite with actors he has previously worked with on Firefly and Castle. It's clear that Fillion has established close relationships with his fellow co-workers throughout his television career, making these reunions all the more special. So, without further ado, here are the eight actors from Firefly and Castle who have made guest appearances on The Rookie.
9 Alan Tudyk (Firefly)
Alan Tudyk, a close friend of Nathan Fillion, portrayed the beloved character Hoban "Wash" Washburn in the sci-fi series Firefly. Wash, the skilled pilot with a dry wit, was responsible for navigating the Serenity spaceship. Additionally, Alan made memorable appearances in two episodes of The Rookie as Ellroy Basso, a crime scene cleaner. In the episode titled "Clean Cut," Ellroy encounters Fillion's character, Officer Nolan, and both find themselves under attack from assailants at a crime scene. Joining forces with Nolan and his fiancé, firefighter Bailey Nune, Ellroy and his new girlfriend Nell Forrester unite when Nolan is assigned a case near the border.
8 Sean Maher (Firefly)
Sean Maher, known for his role as the kind and gifted doctor Simon Tam on Firefly, showcased his versatility in the season 1 episode of The Rookie titled "Manhunt." In this episode, Maher took on the role of Caleb Jost, an escaped convict on the run from the law. Unlike his character Tam, Jost is a cunning and dangerous criminal who resorts to holding his mother-in-law hostage using a deadly contraption. Maher's portrayal of these contrasting characters highlights his acting range and talent.
7 Gregg Henry (Firefly)
6 Jon Huertas (Castle)
Renowned actor Gregg Henry made a brief appearance in the first season, episode "Homefront," of the hit series The Rookie. In this particular episode, Henry delivered an outstanding performance as a judge presiding over a lawsuit that involved the show's protagonist, Nolan. Earlier in his career, Henry also showcased his exceptional talent in an episode of the beloved show Firefly titled "The Train Job." Portraying the character Sheriff Bourne, he flawlessly embodied the role of a benevolent lawman in the mining town of Paradiso on the planet Regina. Sheriff Bourne's compassionate nature allowed Fillion's character, Reynolds, and his trusted crew aboard the Serenity to depart peacefully after they successfully returned stolen medicine to the grateful town.
Richard Castle, played by Fillion, frequently found himself receiving assistance from NYPD Detective Javier Esposito, portrayed by John Huertas, on the show Castle. Esposito was known for his ability to extricate Castle from difficult situations, especially during high-risk investigations. Huertas made his debut on The Rookie in the first season episode titled "The Bet," where he portrayed an undercover agent working for the Department of Homeland Security. In the show's fifth season episode, "Double Trouble," Huertas returned, but this time he took on the role of director behind the scenes.
5 Tamala Jones (Castle)
4 Seamus Dever (Castle)
Tamala Jones, known for her role as Dr. Lanie Parish in Castle, portrayed a completely different character in The Rookie. In the episode titled "Endgame," she took on the role of Yvonne Thorsen, Aaron Thorsen's mother. While Dr. Lanie Parish was a brilliant medical examiner and a supportive girlfriend, Yvonne Thorsen was a manipulative parent who saw her son's police career as an opportunity for money and reality TV fame. The versatility of Tamala's acting skills shines through as she embodies these two contrasting characters.
In Castle, Seamus Dever took on the role of NYPD Detective Kevin Ryan, who served as the best friend and police partner of Esposito. The dynamic between Ryan and Esposito added a touch of humor to the show, as they frequently bantered about their personal lives and engaged in friendly competition with Castle and Beckett to see who could solve a murder case first. However, in a surprising twist, Dever decided to switch things up in an episode of The Rookie, where he portrayed a lawyer who gets caught by Nolan for attempting to purchase drugs.
3 Molly C. Quinn (Castle)
One of the most touching aspects of Castle was the profound bond between Richard Castle and his daughter Alexis, characterized by their open and sincere communication rooted in unwavering trust and love. This compelling dynamic was revisited when Molly C. Quinn, the actress who portrayed Alexis, made appearances in two episodes of The Rookie as Cindy, the illegitimate child of the incarcerated Oscar Hutchinson. In a poignant scene from season 5 titled "Death Notice," Cindy reaches out to Nolan, seeking guidance and solace from the police officer, as her father has been absent for the majority of her life.
2 Toks Olagundoye (Castle)
Toks Olagundoye's portrayal of Hayley Shipton on Castle quickly captured the hearts of fans. As an intrepid private investigator and former police officer, Hayley played a vital role in helping Castle uncover the secrets of his past. Not only that, but she also lent her expertise to Castle's daughter, Alexis, as they tackled their own cases together. Hayley's methods may not have always been by the book, but they were undeniably effective.
In her latest venture on The Rookie, Olagundoye brings her talent to the character of Fiona Ryan. Fiona serves as an inspirational mentor and a trusted companion to Nolan, the show's rookie officer. As an ethics and criminal justice professor, Fiona plays a crucial role in guiding Nolan through the challenging night class he must attend as part of his training. However, Fiona's value extends beyond the classroom. When faced with a perilous situation, Nolan knows he can count on Fiona for support and guidance.
Toks Olagundoye's performances as both Hayley Shipton and Fiona Ryan showcase her versatility and ability to captivate audiences. Whether she's uncovering secrets or guiding rookies, Olagundoye's characters leave a lasting impression.
1 Annie Wersching (Castle)
Annie Wersching's unforgettable performances on Castle and The Rookie were both chilling and electrifying. In Castle, she masterfully portrayed Dr. Kelly Nieman, a renowned cosmetic surgeon who happened to be the girlfriend of a serial killer. Her character's malevolence added an extra layer of suspense to Castle and Beckett's murder investigation. On The Rookie, she took on the role of the recurring character Rosalind Dyer, a deranged serial killer whose fixation was on Nolan and the officers and detectives of Mid-Wilshire. The death of Rosalind in season 5 was one of the most heart-wrenching moments in The Rookie. Unfortunately, audiences will never have the opportunity to witness new performances from the brilliant Wersching, as she tragically lost her battle with cancer in January 2023.
