Ali MacGraw, Ryan O'Neal's co-star in "Love Story," expressed her deep emotions in a tribute to him upon learning of his passing on Friday. In a statement shared with CNN on Saturday through a representative, MacGraw reflected on her great experience working with Ryan years ago and the lasting friendship that followed.
The duo left a lasting impression in the 1970 film "Love Story," where a wealthy Ivy Leaguer (O'Neal) falls for a free-spirited girl (MacGraw) and witnesses her tragic death from a terminal illness. The movie was a major hit, earning both actors Oscar nominations for their performances in this adaptation of Erich Segal's novel, directed by Arthur Hiller.
"He was a talented actor, with a charming and humorous personality. I credit much of my success to his generosity as my co-star. Learning about Ryan's long-time illness and eventual passing has been heartbreaking," MacGraw stated on Saturday. "Fortunately, his son Patrick and a few close friends were by his side. My condolences go out to all four of his children and those who loved him dearly."
She added that working with Ryan again for the national tour of the A.R. Gurney play in 2015 was a wonderful experience. "I shall miss him and the fun we shared, and I pray that he will find peace at last," she said. Other stars who paid tribute to O'Neal included his "What's Up, Doc?" and "The Main Event" costar Barbra Streisand, who wrote that she was "sad" to hear the news of the actor's death on X (formerly Twitter).
"He was a delightful and charismatic person, and his memory will live on," she penned on Friday.
ONeal, known for his roles in "Barry Lyndon" and "Paper Moon," passed away on Friday, as announced by his son Patrick on social media. The actor was said to be 82 years old.
"On Friday, Patrick ONeal shared the news that his dad peacefully passed away, surrounded by his loving team who supported and cared for him. 'My father Ryan ONeal has always been my hero,' he wrote. 'I looked up to him and he was always larger than life.'"
