Alana Thompson, also known as "Honey Boo Boo," is grieving the loss of her older sister, Anna "Chickadee" Cardwell.
"This is a post I never thought I would have to write," the 18-year-old wrote on Instagram on Sunday, December 10. "Last night, we all gathered to shower Anna with love and reassured her that it was okay to let go. Sadly, at around 11pm, Anna passed away."
"She continued, 'Anna was in so much pain last night, but now, as a family, we all know she is at peace. I really don't know what to say as my heart is completely broken. Watching my 29-year-old sister struggle with this horrible disease this past year hasn't been easy. Anna was a fighter and still is.'
Earlier on Sunday, the sisters' mother, Mama June Shannon, announced that Cardwell had passed away at the age of 29. Cardwell, who had been battling stage IV cancer, is survived by her two daughters, her mother, and her siblings. (Mama June, 44, shared Cardwell and Jessica Shannon, 27, with David Dunn, Lauryn "Pumpkin" Efird, 23, with Michael Anthony Ford, and Alana with Mike "Sugar Bear" Thompson.)"
Alana expressed deep sorrow for her nieces Kaitlyn and Kaylee. She prayed for her family and asked the Lord to support them in the days ahead. In a Sunday tribute, she thanked her sister for waiting until she was home to pass away and expressed her regret that her sister will not be able to attend her college graduation, but she knows she will continue to support her from heaven.

Alana expressed, "We are committed to keeping your legacy alive and I'll make it a point to celebrate our birthday as if you were still here! The sky seems a little different today. We'll always cherish you, Anna. Your departure has deeply affected me, but I know you're in a better place now, free from pain!" Anna was diagnosed with adrenal carcinoma in January and underwent several rounds of chemotherapy.

In May, Mama June shared exclusively with We that this round of chemotherapy has been notably different. She mentioned that Anna has been sleeping more and that this round has been particularly difficult. Mama June expressed concern for how Anna is feeling as she has to live with it every day, mentioning that if she's feeling the strain as her mom, she can only imagine how Anna is coping. Sadly, by July, Anna's cancer had become terminal.
