Airport employee implicated in $22M gold heist at major international hub

Authorities have apprehended a group of individuals connected to a significant gold robbery at a prominent international airport. The incident, which took place last year, involved a multimillion-dollar theft at Toronto's Pearson International Airport, as confirmed by law enforcement agencies in both Canada and the United States.

Last year's multimillion-dollar gold heist at Toronto's Pearson International Airport led to the arrest of six people, according to police in Canada and the US. Additionally, arrest warrants have been issued for three others involved in what authorities are calling an "inside job." All nine suspects are facing more than 19 charges.

On April 17, 2023, a large amount of gold bars and foreign currency, valued at over 22 million Canadian dollars, was stolen from a secure storage facility. The theft was carried out using fake paperwork, according to the police. The stolen items had recently arrived on an Air Canada flight from Zurich, Switzerland.

Police have identified at least two former Air Canada employees who are believed to have assisted in the theft. One of the suspects is currently in custody, while an arrest warrant has been issued for the other individual involved.

Detective Sgt. Mike Mavity of Peel Regional Police mentioned that the theft at Air Canada required the involvement of individuals from within the company. He believed it was an "inside job."

Air Canada spokesperson Peter Fitzpatrick expressed gratitude towards the police for their thorough investigation. Due to the legal proceedings, they are limited in providing further comments. However, Fitzpatrick confirmed that two individuals implicated in the theft were employed in the cargo division at Air Canada. One had already left the company before the recent arrests, and the other has been suspended.

The investigation, known as "Project 24Karat," was conducted by the Pennsylvania division of the US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

According to the ATF, a Canadian man who was arrested in Pennsylvania for traffic violations in September 2023 was identified as the driver of the truck that stole the cargo container. The man was in the US illegally and ran away on foot during a traffic stop when a state trooper discovered firearms in his rental car.

Eric DeGree, an ATF special agent, mentioned at the Peel Regional Police news conference that a court-authorized search warrant for the vehicle resulted in the recovery of firearms believed to be intended for smuggling into Canada. He highlighted that 65 firearms were intercepted, preventing them from being used in potential violent crimes.

A cargo container containing $15 million worth of gold and other valuable items was reported stolen from Toronto airport, according to police.

Authorities believe that a sophisticated organized crime group was behind the theft. They suspect that the culprits intended to use the stolen gold and cash to smuggle firearms into Canada.

"We believe that the stolen gold was melted down and the profits were used to finance the illegal firearms," explained Mavity. He added, "It appears that the gold and money were funneled into the firearms trafficking aspect of the investigation."

Canadian and US officials confirm that the investigation is still ongoing and only a small portion of the stolen gold bars and cash has been recovered. Police discovered five crudely melted gold bangles worth approximately $90,000 during a search warrant execution in Ontario.

Deputy Police Chief Nick Milinovich stated that the recent gold heist was the largest in Canadian history, and the sixth largest in world crime history.

Mayor of Brampton, Ontario, Patrick Brown expressed his surprise at the scale of the gold heist, comparing it to a scene from a movie like Ocean’s Eleven or CSI. He highlighted that the criminals underestimated the police's abilities and were ultimately proven wrong.

The multimillion-dollar gold heist at Toronto's Pearson International Airport is a testament to the audacity and sophistication of organized crime. The theft, carried out with the assistance of insiders, highlights the vulnerabilities of secure facilities and the lengths to which criminals will go to obtain illicit gains. The subsequent investigation, involving multiple law enforcement agencies, demonstrates the importance of international cooperation in combating transnational crime.

The recovery of firearms and the suspicion that the stolen gold was used to finance firearm smuggling raises concerns about the potential for violence associated with such organized crime activities. The intercepted weapons could have posed a significant threat to public safety, and the disruption of this illicit trade is a major victory for law enforcement. The ongoing investigation and the limited recovery of stolen items indicate that the full extent of this criminal enterprise is yet to be fully uncovered, and further arrests and charges are likely.
