What's Going on With Rick and Morty Season 7?

After Justin Roiland's Exit, Rick & Morty Season 7 Surprises Fans with an Explosive New Direction

The audience score for Rick and Morty has gradually declined over the past few seasons. The initial seasons, 1 and 2, received a robust positive consensus, each earning a 97% score. However, there was a slight decrease to 95% for season 3. Seasons 4 and 6 saw a more significant drop, with ratings of 84% and 87% respectively. Season 5 experienced a substantial decline, reaching a low of 60%.

However, season 7 takes a significant decline, following a controversial period in the show's history. Following accusations of domestic abuse and false imprisonment, Justin Roiland, the co-creator and voice of Rick and Morty, was dismissed from the show in January 2023. In order to replace Roiland's characters, Rick and Morty, soundalikes were brought in, with Ian Cardoni assuming the role of Rick and Harry Belden portraying Morty.

The absence of Roiland is evident in almost all of the audience reviews for the season. However, most reviews not only critique the voices but also express dissatisfaction with the comedy, unfavorably comparing it to more well-known adult animations like The Simpsons or Family Guy. Only the premiere has aired thus far, so it remains uncertain if the upcoming episodes of Rick and Morty season 7 can reclaim the audience's adoration. However, at present, the state of this season appears rather bleak.
