Adriana Lima was surprised to see the photos of herself at the Los Angeles premiere of The Hunger Games: The Ballad Of Songbirds & Snakes in November, just like her fans. Despite initially denying plastic surgery claims and responding to fans who said her face looked “swollen” and “unrecognizable,” Lima, 42, confessed in a recent interview with Harper’s Bazaar Arabia that she was startled by her appearance.
"When I saw the photos, I was in disbelief. It was like looking at someone else. It was all so unfamiliar because that's not how I see myself. Even now, I don't recognize that image. You can have a different perspective of yourself," she shared with the publication.
"I wasn't offended at all, though – I found it funny. The truth is, I'm not 16 anymore. I may have started modeling at 16, but I'll never be that age again. I'm 42 now, and I've never been happier; never more content with who I am. I fully embrace my age and won't change for anyone."
The day after the debut, Lima clapped back at critics with a bare-faced selfie on Instagram, saying, “The face of a weary mother of one teenage girl, two preteens, one active boy, a 1 year old learning to walk, and three dogs… thanks for your concern.”
Adriana Lima, photographed by Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic, is the mother of two daughters, Sienna (11) and Valentina (14), with her ex-husband Marko Jarić. She also welcomed a son, Cyan, in August 2022 with her boyfriend, Andre Lemmers.
Lima, along with Lemmers, 42, and their combined children, Miah and Lupo, attended the premiere. In an interview with Harper's Bazaar Arabia, Lima expressed concern about the impact of public criticism on her children.
“My concern about this is not for me, it’s for my children because they were with me, they saw me and then this stuff comes out,” she explained. “I don’t want them to feel the pressure to look a certain way because of other people. If they do that to me, how will they be safe? And the truth is, I don’t think anyone is safe because people are always criticizing.”

Adriana Lima has always felt a strong sense of protectiveness towards her children. In a 2016 interview with Vogue, she opened up about the many worries she experiences as a mother.
Lima expressed, "When I first became a mom, I felt the need for everything to be perfect and handled delicately. I was anxious about every little thing my kids did. If it wouldn't have made me seem crazy, I would have wrapped them in bubble wrap. Now, I still have the desire to protect them, but I also recognize their resilience as young girls."
