Newly acquired emails from The Verge reveal that Activision executives held a meeting with Nintendo executives in December 2022 to deliberate upon the upcoming Nintendo console.
Expressing his thoughts in an email, Chris Schnakenberg of Activision suggested that the upcoming Nintendo platform, codenamed "NG Switch," might possess comparable technical prowess to the PS4 and Xbox One. Schnakenberg emphasized the importance of securing early access to development hardware prototypes and commencing the validation process at the earliest opportunity.
On December 15, 2022, Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick reportedly held a meeting with Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa. The Verge reported that Kotick testified during the Microsoft vs. FTC case, stating that Activision would potentially bring Call of Duty to Switch if they were informed about the technical specifications of the upcoming Nintendo console. Kotick also expressed regret for not seizing the opportunity to bring earlier Call of Duty games to Switch.
Kotick expressed his hope that the company would release future Call of Duty games on a Nintendo platform. However, he noted that Activision needs more information about the platform before confirming anything. If the Activision Blizzard deal closes, Microsoft and Nintendo have agreed to a 10-year agreement to bring Call of Duty to Nintendo. The merger deadline has been extended to October 18, raising the possibility of a resolution in the near future.
In September, Eurogamer and VGC reported that Nintendo showcased a demo of Switch 2 at Gamescom in August. They presented tech demos to developers, including an enhanced version of Breath of the Wild. Additionally, Nintendo reportedly exhibited The Matrix Awakens, a tech demo from Epic Games showcasing Unreal Engine 5, featuring Nvidia DLSS upscaling and ray-tracing support.
According to rumors, the next console from Nintendo, possibly called Switch 2, is expected to be released in 2024.
The Nintendo Switch, now in its seventh year, has consistently achieved impressive sales figures, although they have been declining recently. However, curiosity about what the future holds remains. Doug Bowser, a marketing executive at Nintendo, stated to the AP that there are currently no announcements regarding upcoming Nintendo hardware. Nonetheless, the company is optimistic about the current model and feels confident about its prospects.
"We are venturing into unfamiliar territory with this platform, and it is thrilling to witness the ongoing demand," Bowser remarked.
