Summary
The buzz about who will be cast as Rhysand in Hulu's upcoming series based on the popular book series A Court of Thorns and Roses is reaching its peak, however, the ideal actor for the part is regrettably over the desired age range.
The character of Rhysand is characterized by his playful nature, which is a vital aspect of his personality. The actor portraying him in the television series must exhibit depth while also exuding a sense of confident humor.
The selection of the actor to play Rhysand is of utmost importance as he is a key figure in the series and plays a pivotal role in advancing the storyline. Accurate casting is critical for the triumph of the television show.
The speculation surrounding the casting of characters in Hulu's upcoming adaptation of A Court of Thorns and Roses has intensified, revealing the unfortunate reality that the ideal actor for the role of Rhysand is now too aged. Rhysand, the dominant figure of the Night Court and the most formidable High Fae in Prythia, possesses a crucial presence within the literary world of Court of Thorns and Roses. Throughout the series, his character undergoes significant changes, transitioning from an enigmatic figure to one of the most captivating individuals.
Rhysand's distinctive trait is his mischievousness. This facet of Rhys's personality serves as a means to maintain an air of intrigue that he has carefully cultivated over the years. At the same time, it forms an integral part of his core identity. He effortlessly delivers flirtatious comebacks and witty remarks. Despite his apparent nonchalance, Rhysand is a character who deeply cares about everything and everyone, often to an excessive degree. Thus, the actor portraying him in the Court of Thorns and Roses television series must exhibit depth, while always infusing the performance with a touch of cheeky confidence. Unfortunately, the most suitable actor for the role has already surpassed the appropriate age range.
Ian Somerhalder Would Have Made Him A Perfect Rhysand–10 Years Ago
When readers envision the perfect actor to play Rhysand in the Court of Thorns and Roses books, Ian Somerhalder often comes to mind. Known for his portrayal of the charismatic and seductive vampire Damon in The Vampire Diaries, Somerhalder embodies the qualities that would make him an ideal fit for Rhysand: irresistible charm, playful flirtation, and a caring nature hidden beneath a nonchalant exterior. Additionally, his dark hair and captivating light eyes perfectly match the physical appearance of the character. In fact, the similarities between Damon and Rhysand are so striking that it raises the question of whether the author, Sarah J. Maas, subconsciously drew inspiration from Somerhalder's performance when developing Rhysand.
However, despite Somerhalder's suitability for the role, his age of 44 presents a hurdle. In some ways, the age of an actor is irrelevant when portraying an immortal High Fae. Forty-four years old is still considered relatively young compared to the centuries-old High Fae characters in A Court of Thorns and Roses, who miraculously maintain youthful appearances. Nevertheless, it is precisely this requirement that renders Somerhalder too old for the role. Rhysand's age is in stark contrast to his youthful looks; despite being ancient by human standards, he still resembles a man in his late 20s or early 30s. While Somerhalder undoubtedly ages gracefully, it is likely that the television show will seek a younger actor to portray Rhysand.
Why Rhysand Is Such An Important ACOTAR Character To Cast Right

The casting for Rhysand is crucial, regardless of whether they choose Somerhalder or a younger actor. Rhysand is arguably the second most significant character in the ACOTAR books, following protagonist Feyre. As the story progresses, one could argue that he becomes a co-protagonist, driving the majority of the plot. Whoever is chosen for this role must be capable of anchoring an entire TV show. Without Rhys, the narrative would fall apart.
Beyond the plot, Rhysand brings immense heart to A Court of Thorns and Roses. While the story is primarily told from Feyre's perspective, her connection with Rhysand colors the entire narrative. Through Feyre, the audience is introduced to the other characters, but it is through Rhys that Feyre encounters the most important ones. Rhysand's warmth and affection for his friends instantly endear them to both Feyre and the reader. The success of the A Court of Thorns and Roses TV show depends heavily on capturing the essence of Rhysand.
