In the third season of Abbott Elementary, Lisa Ann Walter’s character Melissa made a big change that made the actress a bit anxious. During an interview with The Wrap on Thursday, April 18, Walter admitted that she was worried about how viewers would react to Melissa ending her relationship with Gary (played by Bruno Amato) in the season premiere.
Walter explained that he was initially worried that American women would dislike Melissa for easily ending a relationship with a good man, especially at a certain age. He noted that women don't often express their desires clearly, such as wanting to see their partner only three nights a week and preferring to sleep in their own bed. Creator Quinta Brunson was right in predicting the audience's positive response, with many cheering Melissa on for her decision.
The Parent Trap star mentioned that she did not have any discussions with Brunson about the breakup. However, she did receive an apology from the show's creator.
Walter shared, "We had different work schedules, so I didn't get to see her much. But after filming the scene, she jokingly said, 'I hope you're okay with us making you seem like a bit of a flirt,' and I replied, 'No problem, I thought it was funny.'"

Melissa and Gary fans can find comfort in Walter's hint that this may not be the final time the duo's romantic bond is explored. Walter expressed hope for more seasons to delve into their relationship further, stating that sometimes feelings and decisions can change.
In February, ABC announced that Abbott Elementary had been renewed for a fourth season. This news brought a sense of security to Walter, an experienced actress, for the first time in her career. Despite appearing in popular movies like The Parent Trap and Bruce Almighty, she humbly shared with People that she didn't see herself as a "star" in the industry.
"I was the woman that made you cry in The Parent Trap, and you’re still looking for a job the next week," Walter explained. "So honestly, feeling safe? The season 4 pickup of Abbott."
Walter mentioned that her role on the popular ABC show allowed her to create new memories with her children, Jordan, 36, Delia, 32, and twins Spencer and Simon, 23. Last summer, the family enjoyed their first vacation together in Italy.
She also shared, "Just because you're in a movie doesn't mean you're wealthy. Prior to this opportunity, I couldn't afford to take my kids on a vacation beyond visiting the San Diego Zoo or skiing nearby. It was a special experience to have everyone travel together for the first time."
Abbott Elementary airs on ABC Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET and is available to stream on Hulu the next day.
