After receiving an overwhelming show of support from online fans, Aardman Animations successfully resolved their clay storage problem. The renowned creators of the beloved franchises Wallace & Gromit and Chicken Run had recently revealed that they were facing a shortage of the specialized clay required for their animations.
The studio recently announced that they only had enough Lewis Newplast, the clay they use for their stop-motion, to make one more Wallace and Gromit film. As expected, fans were devastated by Aardman's limited access to materials and showed overwhelming support. However, the studio has now provided an update on the clay shortage, sharing some exciting news.
Aardman reassures fans that they’re stocked with clay
After receiving a ton of support from fans of their work, Aardman Animations made a public statement in which they assured their viewers that they’re well stocked with clay.
Aardman's statement assured fans that they need not worry about the future of their beloved clay creations. They stated that they have abundant stocks of modelling clay to cater to both current and upcoming productions. Similar to Wallace in his workshop, they have been secretly working on plans for a while now to facilitate a seamless transition to new stocks, thus allowing them to carry on creating their iconic productions.
Aardman's recent clay shortage came to light following the closure of Newclay Productions, the main supplier of Lewis Newplast. This unforeseen development in early 2023 reportedly caught Aardman off guard and left them in a scramble.
Aardman's supply of clay from Newclay Products will last them for a while, according to Valerie Dearing, one of the directors. Dearing confirms that Aardman purchased a substantial amount of Newplast, equivalent to approximately two years' worth, which consisted of about 40 boxes weighing around 400 kg. Although it takes more than a ton of clay to create an Aardman film, fans can be reassured that the studio will utilize their existing Newclay stock before transitioning to a different type of clay.
