Movies frequently depict strong and captivating themes that often go unnoticed amidst the constant stream of anime. Therefore, here are eight films that deserve greater recognition. In the world of anime, movies without the backing of popular studios like Studio Ghibli often don't receive the recognition they deserve. Several outstanding films tend to get lost in the shuffle as the anime library continues to grow each year.
The depth and range of anime movies is so extensive that it's hard to grasp with just a few titles. Once you get into it, you'll find yourself diving into a vast array of shows, making it hard to wrap your head around this endless sea of content.
Movies, in particular, are often overshadowed by series. That's why we've put together a list of the top eight anime movies that deserve more recognition worldwide.
1. To the Forest of Firefly Lights
In just 45 minutes, this movie will evoke bittersweet emotions as it explores the unorthodox bond between a young girl named Hotaru Takegawa and Gin, a mysterious masked boy. Despite his aversion to physical contact, Gin is always there to assist Hotaru when she gets lost in the forest.
Against advice, Hotaru remains captivated by Gin and seeks him out every summer. The film unfolds slowly from Hotaru's perspective, offering a tranquil and pure portrayal of love in its platonic form.
2. The Stranger by the Shore
"In a world full of fear, we choose love," said openly gay novelist Shun Hashimoto, who lives on a secluded island. He grapples with his fear of coming to terms with his sexuality due to past experiences. While observing Mio Chibana sitting alone on a beach bench, Shun learns of the death of Mio's mother and seeks him out.
Despite Mio's departure from the island for three years, upon his return, he is more open about his feelings than ever. Meanwhile, Shun's past inhibits him from pursuing his love for Mio. This anime movie tells the heartwarming story of two strangers who help each other heal emotional wounds and strive for happiness together.
3. Summer Ghost
Fireworks are believed to soothe the spirits of the departed. In the company of Tomoya Sugisaki, Aoi Harukawa, and Ryou Kobayashi, they ignited fireworks in hopes of encountering the ghost of a young woman who supposedly took her own life. Strangely, the apparition is only visible in a specific location and is said to appear to those on the brink of death.
Curiously, all three are able to see and communicate with the ghost. Through their interactions, they each discover newfound purpose and meaning in their lives. Ultimately, Tomoya uncovers the truth behind the young woman's passing. Despite its brief 39-minute runtime, "Summer Ghost" ties up all loose ends.
4. Goodbye, Don Glees
This anime film may only have a 6.6 rating on IMDb, but it's much more than that. Goodbye, Don Glees tells the story of three friends who set out on a quest to clear their names after being falsely accused of starting a forest fire. Following Drop's lead, Roma and Toto find themselves in even more trouble.
As their journey unfolds, the trio forms a strong bond, but Drop is hiding a secret that could tear them apart. The animation is beautiful, and the film will take you on an emotional rollercoaster.
5. Lonely Castle in the Mirror
What would you wish for if you could have anything? For Kokoro Anzai and her six peers, the wish is simple: an end to their suffering. Kokoro has stopped going to school and isolates herself in her room, until one day her mirror begins to glow and she finds herself in a mysterious castle. Here, she meets six other outcast teenagers, and they are told by a young girl known as Wolf Queen that they can have one wish if they find the key to a hidden room. However, only one of them can have their wish granted. As they continue to meet in the castle, an emotional tale unfolds of seven characters trapped in loneliness and misunderstanding, finding freedom through friendship, empathy, and sacrifice.
6. Yes, No, or Maybe Half?
We all conceal our true selves behind masks. Kei Kunieda, a newscaster, presents himself as warm and kind, but in private his behavior is quite the opposite. However, his life takes a turn after an interview with animator Ushio Tsuzuki.
Ushio, unlike Kei, is more upfront and honest. After a chance mishap, Kei becomes entangled in a web of deceit as he helps Ushio with his work. Meanwhile, Ushio becomes intrigued by both of Kei’s personas. The movie has a straightforward plot, but the story unfolds seamlessly over its 53-minute duration.
7. Liz and the Blue Bird
This anime movie is a spin-off of the Hibike Euphonium! series, showcasing a heartwarming fairy tale, a moving musical composition, and a fragile high school friendship. Mizore Yoroizuka, an introverted girl who shares similarities with the lonely Liz in the fairy tale, crosses paths with her blue bird, Nozomi Kasaki, during their high school years.
Both girls are members of the high school concert band, collaborating on a musical piece inspired by the same fairy tale. The reserved and delicate oboist, Mizore, embodies the kind-hearted Liz, while the bright and popular Nozomi plays the flute, exuding the happiness and liveliness of the Blue Bird. As they practice together, it becomes clear that the distance between Mizore and Nozomi is growing.
8. Harmonie
Everyone has a unique world within their mind. But what happens when that world begins to haunt you? Juri Makina finds herself dreaming of a futuristic world within her dreams, accompanied by a recurring melody and the sight of a robot girl near a dilapidated tower. Meanwhile, Akoi Honjo possesses the ability to recreate any music he hears.
After Juri's friends change her ringtone to the same melody, Akio plays it once again. It becomes apparent that he also dreams of the same scenario, causing Juri to believe they are somehow connected. This captivating short film is just 25 minutes long, yet it leaves the audience yearning for more. The story's allure lies in its enigmatic nature, leaving viewers to interpret it as they see fit.
