Article Overview
In another universe, some supporting One Piece characters would have made great Straw Hat pirates.
Kuina, a proficient swordswoman and Zoro's childhood companion, would greatly enhance the Straw Hats' combat abilities.
Kaya, a compassionate heiress possessing wealth and a passion for medicine, has the potential to be an invaluable addition to Luffy's crew.
In the world of One Piece, Luffy D. Monkey's Straw Hat Pirates consist of a determined group of individuals, each driven by their own ambitious dreams. However, there are side characters who, given the opportunity, would seamlessly fit in with the crew. The recently released live-action versions of these characters from One Piece season 1 have received much praise for surpassing initial expectations. Nami, Roronoa Zoro, Usopp, and Sanji have already joined Luffy in his journey to the Grand Line, yet the team is not yet complete.
While more Straw Hats are yet to be introduced in Netflix's One Piece season 2, there are already unlikely heroes who would make fantastic additions to Luffy's crew, albeit in an alternate timeline. It's a thought-provoking discussion to have, considering Eiichiro Oda's expansive universe, teeming with well-developed characters who have either aided or hindered the Straw Hats. Some of these characters have the potential to tip the scales in Luffy's favor had they been part of his crew, particularly those introduced in One Piece season 1 who possess a similar energy to the existing team.
7. Helmeppo
Debut: Episode 1, "Romance Dawn"
Throughout season 1 of One Piece, Helmeppo undergoes significant character development. His evolution from a spoiled bully to an honorable cadet is just the beginning, but the progress is remarkable. Naturally, Helmeppo must put in the effort to prove himself worthy of joining the Straw Hats. On one hand, he aspires to become a marine, which means he must view pirates as his adversaries. On the other hand, there is still a hint of mischievousness in him that stems from his "bad" tendencies. Helmeppo strives for career advancement and excels at following orders, making him a potential candidate for Luffy's crew.
6. Kuina
Debut: Episode 4, "The Pirates Are Coming"
Zoro's childhood friend, Kuina, had a profound impact on him, especially with her tragic and game-changing death. The loss of Kuina serves as his constant source of motivation, driving him to persevere no matter the obstacles he faces. This emotional connection is beautifully portrayed in One Piece season 1, episode 4 titled "The Pirates Are Coming." In this episode, Zoro finds himself in a life-threatening situation, but his memories of Kuina and the promise they made empower him to save himself.
Kuina was not only a close friend to Zoro but also his perfect match in terms of strength and determination. Sharing the same dream of becoming the world's greatest swordswoman, she embodied fearlessness and fierce dedication. If Kuina were to join the Straw Hats, they would greatly benefit from her exceptional combat skills, as they are currently lacking in that area.
5. Kaya
Debut: Episode 3, "Tell No Tales"
In the third episode of season 1 of One Piece, titled "Tell No Tales," the Straw Hats journey to Syrup Village where they encounter the lively daydreamer, Usopp, and the compassionate and gentle-hearted Kaya, who happens to be his love interest. Although Kaya is a wealthy heiress, she yearns to share her affection and care with someone other than Usopp. It is worth noting that Kaya possesses valuable resources that the Straw Hats may require in the future, including the ship called the Going Merry, which she generously bestows upon them. Moreover, Kaya aspires to pursue a career in medicine, and despite having Tony Tony Chopper as the crew's doctor, having another skilled professional on board could prove to be beneficial.
4. Nojiko
Debut: Episode 7, "The Girl With The Sawfish Tattoo"
Nojiko, although not being subjected to the same distressing circumstances as Nami, has demonstrated remarkable resilience akin to her adoptive sister. In episode 7 of One Piece season 1, titled "The Girl with the Sawfish Tattoo," the crew encounters Nami's sibling. Nojiko has been molded by her tragic past, yet she refuses to allow it to define her, embodying the fundamental philosophy of the Straw Hat crew. Possessing adeptness with a rifle, a skill invaluable in the treacherous world of One Piece, Nojiko could prove to be a worthy addition to Luffy's team. Furthermore, this inclusion would bring her closer to Nami, enabling her to compensate for the lost years they have endured apart.
3. Zeff
Debut: Episode 5 "Eat At Baratie!"
Chef Zeff, whom the Straw Hats encounter in the fifth episode of One Piece season one titled "Eat at Baratie!," is a significant figure deserving a place on this list due to his heartwarming bond with Sanji. Once known as Red Leg, Zeff led a life of piracy and shared Sanji's dream of discovering the fabled All Blue. With his vast seafaring experience, Zeff would make an invaluable addition to the Straw Hat crew. Furthermore, his wisdom and intelligence would ensure the well-being of the younger members, curbing their occasional bouts of foolishness.
2. Koby
Debut: Episode 1 "Romance Dawn"
In One Piece, the live-action version of Koby receives more spotlight compared to his anime and manga counterparts, and it proves to be a positive change. During the pilot episode titled "Romance Dawn," Luffy comes to the rescue of Koby, freeing him from Alvida's clutches. This grants Koby the freedom to pursue his dream of becoming a marine. Although Koby's unwavering commitment to justice and adherence to the law may clash with Luffy's Straw Hat Pirates and pirates in general, his sharp thinking and courageous nature more than compensate for it. Had Koby not been so determined to join the system and work towards reforming it from within, he could have easily become an exceptional pirate alongside Luffy, Zoro, Nami, Sanji, and Usopp.
1. Buggy
Debut: Episode 1 "Romance Dawn"
Buggy has become a surprising fan favorite in season 1 of One Piece. From his captivating debut in "Romance Dawn," he has remained a beloved character. While his Chop-Chop Devil Fruit gives him formidable power, there is a universe where Buggy could be a valuable member of the Straw Hats. Buggy's playful nature and ability to work well with the crew make for entertaining bickering scenes. His story extends far beyond the East Blue and he will undoubtedly remain a standout in the show.
Editor's P/S
As a Gen Z fan, I have mixed feelings about the potential supporting characters joining the Straw Hat Pirates. On one hand, I am excited about the possibilities that these characters could bring to the crew. For example, Kuina's swordsmanship would be a great asset in battle, and Kaya's wealth and medical knowledge would be invaluable. On the other hand, I am also concerned that adding too many new characters could dilute the focus of the story and make it difficult for the existing characters to get enough development.
Ultimately, I think it is important to trust Eiichiro Oda's judgment in this matter. He has a proven track record of creating compelling characters and stories, and I am confident that he will make the best decision for the future of One Piece.
