Both the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes have concluded, and the winter TV schedule is brimming with highly anticipated premieres and returns. However, some shows are still delayed, and others will have shortened seasons.

Abbott Elementary fans eagerly awaiting more episodes of the sitcom will be surprised to learn that production on season 3 was temporarily halted as the writers and actors unions fought for fair pay from major studios.

In October 2023, Quinta Brunson, the creator and star of the show, confirmed that the strikes ending in fall 2023 had resulted in a smaller episode count. She explained that the show's airing schedule was affected by the lost time, as they would not be airing in September like the previous year due to the impact of the work stoppages. She emphasized that the show's setting in a school made it different from other sitcoms and highlighted the challenges of maintaining continuity in the storyline.

Brunson stated, "Last season we did 22 episodes, and that's a significant amount of TV, especially for me since I'm responsible for writing, producing, and starring in it. So, for me, a shorter season was a welcome relief given the exhausting nature of the work."

Meanwhile, reality TV fans can look forward to a new season of The Bachelor, as unscripted entertainment continues to grow in popularity. In January 2024, ABC will premiere season 28, following Joey Graziadei's quest for love after previously competing for Charity Lawson's affection.

“It’s absolutely surreal. It’s starting to sink in slowly, but I’m doing my best to stay present and enjoy it,” Joey expressed during the August 2023 After the Final Rose special. “But it’s unbelievable, I’ll be the first to admit. I never saw this coming. I had no idea my life would turn out like this. It’s crazy! … I put finding The One on hold for a while, but I’m ready to make it a priority again.”

Winter TV Preview 2024: Inside Must-Watch New and Returning Shows

As the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes wrap up, the winter TV lineup is packed with eagerly awaited debuts and comebacks. However, a few shows are facing delays, and some will have abbreviated seasons.

Abbott Elementary fans eagerly awaiting more episodes of the sitcom are in for a surprise. Season 3 production was delayed as the writers and actors unions worked to secure fair pay from major studios. Although both strikes ended in fall 2023, creator and star Quinta Brunson revealed that the stoppages led to a smaller episode count.

"We have to justify losing half a season, half a year. Our season will still be on the school calendar. Last year, we started airing in September, when school started. We’re not doing that this year," she told Deadline in October 2023. "It’s not like coming back to a family show where you can pop in on that family on any sitcom-y thing. It’s really like, what’s going on in the school?"

Brunson added: “We did 22 [episodes] last season, and that’s a lot of TV, especially for me since I’m writing, producing, and starring in it. So, a shorter season is welcomed because it was tiring, exhausting work.”

Unscripted entertainment has become increasingly popular, providing reality TV viewers with a stress-free viewing experience. Season 28 of The Bachelor is set to air on ABC in January 2024, featuring Joey Graziadei's quest for love following his previous pursuit of Charity Lawson’s heart. During the August 2023 After the Final Rose special, Joey expressed his disbelief at the situation and his determination to prioritize finding "The One" once again.
