The 2024 awards season is wrapping up with the 96th annual Academy Awards on Sunday, March 10. Nominations for the awards were announced in January, with Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer leading the pack with 13 nods. This includes nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Actor for Cillian Murphy.

Oppenheimer and Barbie are both nominated for six awards, including Best Picture. However, controversy emerged when lead actress Margot Robbie and director Greta Gerwig did not receive nominations in their categories.

In her TIME 2024 Women of the Year profile, Gerwig, 40, expressed her disappointment at Margot's snub. "Of course I wanted it for Margot," she said, addressing the issue for the first time. "But I'm just happy we all get to be there together."

Ryan Gosling and America Ferrera showed their support for their Barbie family by issuing passionate statements after being nominated for their supporting performances. Gosling emphasized the importance of Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie in the success of the film, stating, “There is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without them.” He expressed disappointment that Gerwig and Robbie were not nominated in their respective categories.

Margot Robbie, who also worked as a producer on the 2023 film, remained positive despite the nominations. During a SAG-AFTRA screening of Barbie in January, she confidently stated, “There’s no way to feel sad when you know you’re this blessed.”
